Understanding Prop Firm Rules: Drawdown, Trailing Limits and Consistency
A plain-English guide to daily loss limits, static vs trailing drawdown and consistency rules.

Why rules matter more than profit targets
Most funded-account failures come from breaking a rule, not from failing to hit a target. Read every rule on the firm's own website before you buy an account — rules change.
Daily loss limit
Usually a percentage of the balance (or equity) at the start of the day. If equity drops below that floor, the account can be breached — even if you are profitable overall.
Static vs trailing maximum drawdown
- Static: the floor is fixed relative to the starting balance.
- Trailing: the floor follows your highest balance or equity upward, and often stops trailing once it reaches the starting balance.
Trailing drawdown means profits you give back still count against you.
Consistency rules
Some firms require that no single day makes up more than a set percentage of total profit. If your best day is too large, you may need more total profit before you can request a payout.
